Yesterday the AFM-EPF trustees continued to spin basic facts about our pension fund in their ongoing attempt to evade accountability. Their latest PR effort, ironically titled “A Call to Act Responsibly,” is a very misleading piece of propaganda in the area of investment performance (read it here). For those who want to read MPS’s response to the trustees’ piece, please click here.
It’s important that the truth be told about our trustees’ failures. However, it’s also important to talk about possible solutions and ways to help save our pensions from being cut. So we want to let plan participants know of an important event next week in Washington DC, and how you can help.
On Wednesday, July 10th at 9:00 –9:30 a.m.,there will be a rally in support of the The Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act (better known as The Butch Lewis Act) across from the Longworth House Office Building on the Capitol lawn. As you know, the Butch Lewis Act is a comprehensive bill that provides loans to severely underfunded multiemployer plans and which protects the full benefits of retirees.
After the rally, the House Ways and Means Committee will be taking up the Butch Lewis Act at 1100 Longworth House Office Building. If the bill is voted out of the Committee, this could pave the way for the bill to go to the House floor in the future where it will be voted on by the full House of Representatives.
It’s important that we let all of Washington know that we support the Butch Lewis Act.
Please join MPS and other union members from across the country who are affected by the multiemployer crisis as we come together to rally in support of the Butch Lewis Act advancing toward passage. To RSVP, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Here is a map of where the rally will be: We are going to be in area 10 on this map on the Capitol lawn (House side). The best place to enter would be where New Jersey Avenue and Independence Avenue meet (SE) across from the Library of Congress.
If you can’t make the rally in person you can still help support the Butch Lewis Act by making calls to the Ways and Means Committee members starting this Monday. (Click here for Ways and Mean call info.)Then on Wednesday please call your Congressperson (House of Reps Website here.) and ask them to support The Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act.
Please feel free to share this with anyone you think would be interested.
Thank You! MPS
